Rivers TUC warns of three-day warning strike

TRADE Union Congress (TUC Rivers State chapter, has vowed to paralyze business activities in Rivers State unless its demand for justice against anti-labour activity in the state is addressed.
The State Chairman, Comrade Chika Onuegbu and the Secretary, Comrade Jonas Ogundu, who made this known last week cited mayhem and injustice allegedly meted out to the leadership of the Union in Rivers State by some workers of Indorama Eleme Petrochemical Company Ltd, as its reason for the threatened three day-warning.
Their protest letter read in part, “The State Administrative Council (SAC) of the Trade Union Congress of Nigeria (TUC) Rivers State has resolved to shut down the entire Rivers State should the Security agencies, government and management of Indorama Eleme Petrochemical Company Ltd fail to investigate, arrest and prosecute properly all those that are directly or remotely involved in the mayhem and violent attacks on PENGASSAN members and leadership on Saturday May 10th 2014 at the premises of Indorama Eleme Petrochemical Company Ltd.
“As you are aware, our TUC State Chairman Comrade Chika Onuegbu who represented the National President of PENGASSAN, was assaulted, beaten and his personal effects taken away by the assailants. TUC Rivers State takes exception to these acts of terror and is determined to ensure that the perpetrators, no matter how highly placed, are brought to book very quickly.
We therefore request that the National Secretariat of PENGASSAN direct all branches, chapters, units and members in Rivers State to comply 100 per cent with the strike notice as follows.”
According to TUC, the three-day warning strike, which will commence on Wednesday May 21st 2014, may snowball into indefinite strike by Monday June 17 2014 “if our demands are not met.”
It would be recalled that TUC State Chairman Comrade Chika Onuegbu who represented the National President of PENGASSAN, Comrade Babatunde Ogun, was reportedly assaulted, and his personal effects taken away by the assailants in the premises of Indorama Eleme Petrochemical Company Ltd, Rivers State.
