Labour tackles FG over electricity tariff increase

THE organized labour, has indicted Federal Government of aiding the new investors in electricity to allegedly defraud Nigerians.
The President, Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Comrade Abdulwaheed Omar, who blamed government for its lack of consideration for Nigerian masses before dishing out its compulsory tariff which is meant to be paid whether they investors supply electricity or not.
“We are against the move whereby government is only interested in helping the companies, without consideration for Nigerian masses that are being made to pay for what they did not enjoy. It is wrong for government to compel consumers to pay certain amount with or without electricity. Now, they want to increase that compulsory payment without adequate electricity supply.”
“I am a living witness to what I will describe as an astronomical increase in tariff. Meanwhile, what worries us is that most times, the consultations for tariff review come after the deed had been done. This ought not to be.”
The NLC helmsman stated that before any increase in tariff, there ought to be visible improvement in power supply by the electricity distribution companies.
“We can't live in darkness and continue to pay electricity bills, not to talk of when the tariff has increased. As for the fixed charges, I see it as exploitation, because whether I get power or not, I must pay it.”
In addition, he stated that the payment of the N750 fixed charge to the electricity distribution companies should be calculated based on the amount of power consumed by a customer.
