THE banquet hall of the Eko & Suites, Victoria Island, Lagos was agog penultimate Tuesday as stakeholders in the auto industry in Nigeria gathered to witness the re-launch of Dunlop tyres by its new marketer, Somotex Nigeria ltd.

CEO of Dunlop South Africa, Mr Riaz Haffejee who was accompanied by the Head of International Business for Dunlop, Govind Ram to the event disclosed that the brand was given to Somotex on the strength of the experience and extensive network of distribution spread across the country.

During the unveiling of the vehicle at the company's office in Lagos, Managing Director of  C&I Leasing, Vikram Mehtani, disclosed that the decision was based on findings which revealed that there are needs in the small car segment, especially those in the taxi business and young people who desire smart and economical car.

FOLLOWING the record-breaking year of 2012, AUDI AG has posted a successful start to 2013: In January, the company sold around 111,750 automobiles worldwide, an increase of 16.3 percent and testimony to clear growth in all regions of the world. The successful midsize model lines A4 and Q5 made a substantial contribution to this growth. Deliveries rose strongly in China at 38.5 percent. In the USA (+7.5 percent) and Europe (+8.6 percent), too, January deliveries topped the figures from the prior-year month.

“Although the general economic situation in certain European countries remains challenging, we've managed to achieve a very successful start to the year in all regions of the world,” says Luca de Meo, Member of the Board of Management for Sales and Marketing at AUDI AG. And: “Our popular SUV models and the new A3 family will help to continue our pattern of growth in 2013.”

THE Minister of State for Trade and Investment, Dr. Samuel Orton has commended VON Automobiles Nigeria Ltd, the local manufacturers of Ashok Leyland buses for the proficiency and quality of work at the company site in Lagos.

The minister who led a high powered delegation of members of the Committee on Mass Transportation for Nigerians to VON Automobiles plant in Lagos also applauded the vehicle assembly plant for transforming the defunct Volkswagen of Nigeria (VWoN) plant within a relatively short period of time.
